My friend, you hit the nail on the head. But it's something I have to deal with on a daily basis here in, as you say, "The People's Republic of California". Next, they'll adopt a a tree-hugger as the state logo. Good grief...

Please don't misconstrue me as one of them. I'm all for the 2nd Amendment, I just don't particularly like it when the bad guys have gats.

got yer back,

Honestly, I wasn't thinking of the gun for using on "someone", more like "something" perhaps an attacking wildabeast or a rabbid giraffe. LOL

We always carry guns here when we go fishing because the snakes come up into the boat to say HI and sometimes try to taste us, which isn't fun. (no, we do NOT shoot holes through the bottom of the boats - hahaha) I was not planning to take my pistol anyway. I just didn't think it to be a safe thing to have for the trip.

As for the trip back along 40 from west to east, I did that last year when I drove to San Diego and Mexico. Also, I am heading back to Denver after seeing the Grand Canyon because I have a friend there where I can stay for a few days to relax and I can have the bike serviced at a local dealer since it will be 3,000~ish miles once I get back to that point. I have just about everything planned out for the trip. Perhaps instead of taking 70 and 64 east home from Denver, I'll go north on 25 into Wyoming, then east on 90 through South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconson, then take 39 south to 74 through Indianapolis and Cincinati. From there, I can take 75 to 64 and head back toward home. Just think - LOL - I can stop at a White Castle along the way. I have not had those greasy little things since 1988!

Then again, I think I'll save the northern US for next summer. LOL ... I will need to get back to work some time sooner than that because money tends to run out when you're not working! Besides, I have to pay for tuition for this coming fall semester.

Sounds like BIG fun, Cliff. Enjoy it all and give us a recap when you return home safely.

Best,

You also mut understand the circumstances involving the use of deadly physical force. I do not know of a state which authorizes the use of deadly physical force to terminate a larceny. is 15-25 years in prison worth it? The worst thing is if the criminal survives and sues you. He ends upgetting your bike in the end. Ironic isn't it.

I would only use my gun as a means of protection for myself or families well being, as far as the bike being stolen, that's why I have insurance.

So, I have to ask -- how do you keep the innkeeper from blowing out a 'O' ring when they see you pulling a bike into the room?

Ummm...the trick is not NOT get a room right next to the window in the office. What they don't see won't bother them.

I have done this probably 3 dozen times, and only once did someone say anything to me. Akmed didn't own the hotel, he was just the late-night clerk, and he just warned me that if the bike leaked oil I'd be charged to clean the carpet. I told him not to worry because I always put the hotel towels under the bike

LOL .. you never know what hotel towels have had on them.

"Hello, front desk? Yes, I need more towels. Lots more towels. Enough to soak up about 7 pints of blood." LOL

I carry 95% of the time, including %100 of the time at work: a .25 semi-auto goes in a wallet holster in my back pocket. About 80% of the time when I ride, and about 50% of the time overall, I also have a 9mm in a shoulder holster.
Never leave home without it! CCW is the way to go where legal, no probable cause, no search. Use of a gun should be the very last resort to solve a problem but it is better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Planning a 3500km 4 day round trip in February.

Taking a disk lock, sleeping bag, and my atm card.
No bags, no suitcases, just me and my bike.

In the open skies of Australia, you can sleep safely in the bush, and wake up with ALL your possessions where you left them!

As a 15 year veteran police officer on an inner city police department, I can say a couple of things about carrying a gun with you when you travel. First off check state laws. Not all states recognize other states permits and some are quite strict on carryign a handgun. (i.e. California, Illinois as examples)
More to the point though is if your not causing a problem or reason for a cop to stop you then your not goign to be messed with. And if approached a good seasoned officer will be able to read you in a second to know whether your a threat. Even if a gun is showing he will probably not disarm you without a good reason. Most cops respect gun owners and will not harrass a legal carrying person. I sometime carry when I travel and sometimes I don't. Usually depends on where I am going and how much I wanna deal with it. As far as using the firearm. First you must have a certain mindset before even carrying a firearm. You must be willing to use it or it will be used against you. Second you have more rights to use your firearm to protect yourself and your property than a police officer has to use his firearm. The one thing to remember is that you were in fear of your life.
Long live the 2nd Amendment.

Thank you, waross!
That was the most precise thing I have heard on this thread. Mindset and training. Too bad we have to look up which states we can ride though just to carry our personal protection with us.
Stay safe and thanks again. I've got your six!

Apologies to people who disagree with me (flame suit on) but....

We banned (nationally) handguns and privately registered weapons of certain types some years ago, and had a national moratorium on gun ownership, guns were bought back by the government, (yes, they were paid) and gun ownership dramatically cut to a mere fraction of previous levels.

It is now extremely rare for anyone to go on a rampage (there are only so many people you can kill/wound with a knife at once), and very few people get shoty with 'unloaded' guns, or while cleaning them.

We expect our citizens to behave like civilised people, and part of that is controlling themselves when it comes to violence.

We have no dangerous animals wandering the streets at night (except people), and no 'enemy' on our doorstep.

But we do expect people to stand up for themselves, and Australians have a deserved reputation to enjoy a good fight. Not from 30 paces though, hand to hand, like real men.

Whilst I am doggedly against the erosion of civil liberties, I can heartily recommend having fewer guns around. That means less people trying to shoot me and my family.

In a nation where it is illegal to own guns only the criminals and the government will have them.

Most gun related crimes here are committed by someone who has obtained the gun illegally. Thereby circumventing the gun control laws. Which politicans then use the oppurtunity to inact more control laws...

Have done the VA to the Dakotas trip, via wherever, many times and only use a hardware store cable lock – which I carry more than use… If you own one of those high-profile bikes you may have something to fear, but even though I never stay in uptown establishments (quite to the contrary <grin>) I’ve never had my scoots messed with, ever… never stay never, but my theory is that a fresh layer of road grime and gear that doesn’t scream newbie or money, or both ( I usually use GI surplus – far cheaper and hardier than the RUB gear), is usually as good a deterrent as any… If you can’t travel with some peace of mind, then yer missing the point – so do whatever makes you feel secure but don’t fixate on it…

Right. Assuming you wake up at all. Too many poisonous creatures in Australia! Then again, not many people, and people can be the most "poisonous" of all. So maybe you've got a point!

Enjoy your trip. Sounds great!
