I have the C50 and ride with a buddy that has an '04 V-Star 1100. He seems to keep up just fine . I looked at the M50 as well but chose the C50 because of the retro look, floor boards (which make your legs want to sit very naturally next to the tear drop fuel tank), and it has the heal-toe shifter. Other than some difference in the front suspension the specs seem to be pretty much the same. The only catch is that you may end up "wanting" more power, because the ride is so nice, rather than "needing" it.

I really wanted the M50 myself and was all set to buy it. I went in and saw a 2006 C50 in Silver/Gray and thought twice. I thne compared the riding position of the two and determined the C50 suited me better so that's what I got. I love it to death but still think of the M50 often! Remeber, on a 1100 you gotta remove the pipes to do an oil change. How stupid is that!!!

While the M50 is my very first bike ever (that doesn't say Huffy...), I have to say I couldn't be more happy.
I like the looks of the VStars (looked at the 650's originally...the 1100 out of my price range), but the flow of the line on the M50 and styling of it just kept drawing me back. There is plenty of power, and there aren't that many bikes out in this area that look a lot like it.
A friend of mine has ridden a few bikes through the years (some Ninja and a GoldWing), and was leaning towards a VStar for him and his wife...until I pulled up on my M50 and let him take it for a ride down the road a ways. He came back with a B-I-G smile on his face and said, "Nice!"
He was mad, though, because now he has another bike on his list he has to choose from...after he had already set his mind on the VStar.
Again, you're not going to get rocket speeds on this, but you have PLENTY of power to get what you need done. This is a cruiser, so you're looking more into the looks than speed, anyway.
I've heard a lot about the seat issue, and I only have about 430 miles on mine, but I haven't noticed anything at all. Now, the fact of having to take off the pipes to change the oil on the VStar is a bit of a downer. Also, LOVE the fuel injection on the M50, although there are those out there that see that as "another thing to go wrong on it...".
Either way, they're both really good bikes. You'll be happy with whichever one you choose. Just keep looking and comparing and eventually one will nip you in the butt. One will hit you, don't worry...

I rode my M50 this past weekend in a poker run with some much larger bikes. Most of the run was rather fast paced and I had no trouble keeping up with the other bikes in our group. Keep in mine we weren't trying to hit top end, however we weren't wasting anytime under acceleration.

Any Suzuki bias aside, it's really hard to comare these two bikes. I have riden both and they are simply different. I ended up on the M50 because it just felt better. The power of the M50 was more than enough for me (I'm 5'10" and 170lbs.), but I generally ride solo... hitting 100mph w/o too much strain. I would read the experiences on the M50-specific forum of those who often go 2up. I get the impression that they are all happy as well.
Best wishes with your choice!

Thanks to everybody whose chiming in on this. The new kawasaki 900 is becoming a possibility but, I don't like the looks at all, too classic for me. It's also belt drive instead of shaft, I don't really know the pro's and cons to that but shaft drive just seems better.

My thoughts... it's true you won't get sport bike performance from the M50, but it's not designed to be one. However, it will do 75-80 mph all day with power to spare. I've been able to take advantage of the M's power to get me out of some tight situations.

About the drive systems, I've got both shaft and belt (the Sportster obviously being belt driven). Both are low maintenance, unlike chain driven systems. However, it is important to check the belt drive to ensure gravel and small rocks aren't imbedded in the belt. The shaft drive mechanism is sealed from the outside elements, although power transfer is not as efficient as the belt system. Still, I would rather have the shaft drive for the simple fact that it merely requires the occassional oil change and the protection from the outside elements.

C50 - Laid back, standard "cruiser" type bike, looks pretty much like any other cruiser out there, nice bike for tooling around town and steady on the highway, more upright seating position. Says, "Let's take a ride but let's not hurry"

M50 - Not laid back, part cruiser, part sport bike, doesn't look like any other bike out there, loves to run around town (point A to point B quickly), loves to open up on the highway, more of a lean forward position. Says, "Let's go for a run, what are you waiting for?!!"

The M50 sounds more like my kind of bike.
