Default My Bike, Almost Stolen Last Night

I work graveyard shift in a grocery store and my bike is out side all night long. So last night one of my guys is a little late. When he gets to the front of the store where my bike is he sees a guy really eyeballing my bike. My guy asks if the other guy needs anything and he just says, “No just wondering what kind of bike it is”. My guy tells him Suzuki, he leaves and my guy comes in and goes to work.
In the morning one of the early checkers comes flying down my aisle and tells me that she just saw a guy leaning against my bike, his truck was running and the tailgate was open. When he saw her coming his way he jumped in his truck and took off like a bat out of He##. Needless to say, I’m a little concerned about leaving my bike out side unprotected. So I just ordered an alarm. A Scorpio 500se. I’m also going to go the Harley shop and get a heave duty cable lock. I know that nothing is fool proof but if I can slow them down a little it might give me enough time to get to the bike before it’s gone.

Damn, that sucks man. Good to hear all turned out ok. Does the alarm have a keyfob that vibrates or makes noise, etc? I may need to look into that....

This alarm has a pager that goes off if anyone gets near or if they actually set the alarm off.

Let us know how you make out with an alarm. Some have a really good pager system. I use 2 cable locks, one thru each wheel and a disc lock with an alarm. It is my fear that some night some body with a pickup and a helper will arrive to help themselfs.
For the first time in 15 years, I have put a bike in storage. My Wing sat out under the carport here thru 7 winters. But Wings are not a favorite theft item. During that time they attempted to steal my son's ZX6r and stole a Zx9r. Both my son and wife had their cars stolen.
So please share your info on any alarm system.

Out of interest, is this a large problem with cruisers? Somebody boosted a 1000 CBR from our parking lot a few months back, but those things are light. My VS800 weighs more than 400 pounds -- seems like it would take a dedicated team to lift it into a truck. Or am I being naive?

I know a fellow who came home with his wife one night to be confronted by 2 big beefy guys taking his harley up the basement stairs. He said he let them run as either one was bigger than him and his wife combined.
So weight is not the thing holding back but desire. Sport bikes are the rage with young people.

sport bikes are definitely more stolen than cruisers, but dont let that make you comfortable.

2 or 3 ppl and a pick up truck could be gone in about 1 min or less. even a 700 pound bike could be lifted by 3 and into the bed of a truck.

if someone really wants it, its gone no matter what. but alarms and locks at least keep the casual thief away.

All they have to do is put a stick in the wheels and lift it into the truck or van. Try it at home and you will see just how easy it would be.

I would suggest the Sturm Ruger alarm in .357 . Other selection would be Remingon Pump in 12ga.
Of course I keep mine in the locked garage and have the handlebar lock on also. Right now I don't go anywhere that I have to lock it up.
Saw a notice on one of the bulleting boards here at Ft Benning where someone stole a bike from the ForSale (read Lemon Lot) compound. MPs are offering a reward.
Yo Everett, Tell ole Travis HI from down here.

I don't worry much about things getting lifted from my house, but I too work 2nd shift and typically don't leave until 2:00 AM. I don't see my bike for hours at a time, and I've often wondered if I'd go out to find an empty parking space. So far, so good. I check every so often just in case, and it is fully covered, so if it goes I guess I'd get a new ride. But the hell I'd probably have to go through with the insurance company wouldn't be worth it. I guess the only saving grace is it won't be long in this part of the world before it gets to take a long winter's nap in the safety of the garage. I also have the Ruger .357 alarm, but I leave it at home. It is a multi-purpose unit.

As Pinhy has pointed out, sportbikes have a higher theft rate than cruisers. Don't let your guard down though. Cruisers still have the highest market share among motorcycles and with the popularity of various chopper/custom bike related shows, some people out there may try something stupid.

If there's a dude that can pick my c50 up by himself and put it in the back of a pick-up truck, he can have it.... I aint going to stop him (unless I have the forethought to grab one of my firearms prior to going outside )

glad your bike is still here, that was good timing!

That sucks! I had a TT500 stolen from me many years ago. No insurance and never did get it back. I got a few leads, but the cops wouldn't even look for it.
Doesn't your store have some kind of video surveillance?

Default Upside Down!

Wouldn't want to have to rely on my insurance coverage to replace my stolen bike. I paid 6200 for the S50 and I looked at 2 places that give a retail price on bikes. My S50 is now worth around 4900! I now owe right at 6 so I would still owe 900 if the insurance paid and that doesn't figure in the deductable!
It would seem that at least some bikes don't hold their value very well.
I don't like being upside down in a vehicle. Will just have to start making bigger payments until I can even out the equity.
