Did the google thing. Now I'm curious.

Anyway, I'm not physicist (physics sucks), but, it seems that the ideal gas law applies to ideal gases. What is an ideal gas? Is regular air fed through a regular pump and ideal gas?
Seems like the answer is no. According to the samples of experiments on several sites, pressure can fluxuate based on temperature.....Ahhhh, what the crap....who cares. I'm just sticking with air.

"Ideal gas" is not a name for specific gases, but is simply any substance in a gaseous state that acts as such. It means that they all act the same with respect to temperature, pressure, and volume. Of course there are exceptions, as was stated.

Lightbulb Laughing Gas?

Isn't Nitrous Oxide laughing gas? Better than Helium for parties? Could that be put in tires? Is it a Nitrogen derivative?

OH YEAH, it also makes motors go faster!

Well, it's highly explosive, so I guess you'd end up going faster.

As an avid off-roader, I carry a C02 tank, which will fill tires after a day on the trail. This same tank will run air tools. I don't know why anyone (under typical operating conditions) would ever use anything but regular old compressed air if it is available, but on the trail, it is a great way to quickly get tires back up to street pressure.

If I had to guess I'd say co2 is used so that the rapid decompression and resultant cooling don't result in the formation of water. As someone who uses compressors on a daily basis, I can attest to the copious amounts of water produced from a modest air volume.

More science... what the ideal gas law assumes is that there is no interaction between gas molecules (this is why all gases should act the same) but in fact molecules do interact with each other. the Van der Vaals gas equation works at higher pressures it takes into account molecular interactions.

N2 has lower coefficients than that of CO, CO2 and O2 so temperature has a lesser effect on it H2 would be the best but... if punctured you would die

the reason why you would fil tires up with N2 as oppose to any other gas like CO2 or H2 is the fact that N2 is inert so if the tire blows... you dont blow up

Boy all this is giving me gas

My ideal gas is derived from a breakfast with eggs and hot sauce, followed by a liver and onions for lunch, then a nice hot dinner at the local Mexican Restaurant. That is my ideal gas,,,,,

naw,, I think my ideal gas would be any service station that you don't have to pay $.50 to use their air compressor.

Default Co2

A friend of mine rides in the sand every weekend and says that if he has his air tank filled with Co2 instead of just air it will fill about 20 more tires.
