Default making a sportster tank work with a gs550

I am trying to make a sportster tank that I bought work on my 82 suzuki gs550. Im reading the manual and if i understand it correctly the stock tank works by 2 lines off the petcock. one to and one from the carbs. when starting the bike there is a negative pressure forced into the tank through the return line and that opens the valve in the petcock allowing fuel into the fuel line. I am trying to figure out how to make the sportster tank with one fuel line and one vent work on this bike. will it work just hooking up to the fuel line going into the carbs and forget about the return line? or should I hook the negative pressure line(return line) to the vent line on the tank in order to force the fuel out of the tank and into the carbs? any help will be greatly appreciated.
