Default speed.....

.....or lack of.
I have a 1980 GN400 that we have been trying to get running again, after years of neglect.
We have it so that it will start with one kick. And it sems to be fairly smooth. However I can not seem to get it to go over 30 mph.
We have changed the oil, regapped the plug, cleaned the carb's reservoir, and cleaned the air intake.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Cleaning the carb bowl isn't good enough; you need to drain the old gas completely, tank, carb and lines and then put in about 1 gallon fresh with about 2X the recommended rate of Gumout Carb Cleaner or Berryman's B12.
Run for a while then let it sit overnight. Might have to do that for two or three days. If/when it starts running better, top up the tank.

Other thing might be the mechanical timing advance not working......or you have the timing WAY off. What kind of ignition, points+condenser or electronic ??

Your observed top speed is in what gear? How does it rev. in the lower gears?

LOL I bought one of those brand new in 1980, sorry though, don't remember enough about it but sounds like standard troubleshooting should apply. Easy's advice sounds pertinent. I don't remember if that had points or not, probably electronic.

thanks for the suggestions.
I have cleaned the fuel reservoir and the aircleaner already.
The gas is not old. Just put it in and the tank was clean when I mounted it.
But being an old bike I am not ruling out the carb issues.
I will try the gumout suggestion 1st. Then start going down the trouble shooting list.
I'll let you all know.
