Would I get by just fine on the Haynes manual? or is there a lot I would be missing. I would hate to spend $80 when the haynes is $20. I shouldn't be fully disassembling the bike, just cleaning the carbs and doing some other typical maintenance. Will the Haynes have carb syncing insturctions? (Sorry to hijack thread, but it seemed relevant)

Some people claim the factory manuals are better, but I've done extensive work on many cars, trucks, and bikes with Clymer, Haynes, and Chilton manuals. I rarely find them lacking.

Yes, it will have carb sync instructions. If it doesn't, we can help.

Thank you, I'll get the Haynes one then. Wow, you are just helping me out all over the place, aren't you? =D I appreciate it. I'm just getting started with this working on bikes thing. I want to be able to do all my own work, I know where everything goes hopefully and with a good read like this I'll figure it out. I'm not bad with cars so I thought I could give my bike a try. Im no mechanical genius, but I'm handy.

Thanks again,
-Kap

Here are a couple of sites you can try, for manuals:

EBSCOhost - world’s foremost premium research database service

Also an excellent site for information on Yahama XJ series bikes is xjbikes.com

Hope this helps.

Don't forget mikesxs in Florida Yamaha XS650 Parts - MikesXS.com as a great source for OEM parts for the XS. Great service, prompt shipping, never had a problem with them when I had MY 1980 XS650SH.
