| It is my understanding that the original Vespa was designed for military applications. They were simple motorized vehicles light enough to be paradropped and once on the ground, the paratrooper can unfold the scooter and ride to battle (sorry, I couldn't cite source). However, after WWII ended, there was a need for mobility of the masses and the scooter was made (from aircraft parts) for the consumer. I'm quite certain that scooters also played a large role in the post-war reconstruction of Europe.

| The WWII recoilless rifle was essentially like a Bazooka or a hand held rocket launcher. No recoil but one heck of a blast behind it as the rocket launched. It would be better to sit on it than stand behind it |
