| Question I'm almost finished putting the new plastics on the wrecked 06GSXR750. I'm not retarded, I just don't have a lot of time, so I have to do the work when time permits. Anyway . . . I'm down to the last little bit, but I'm having a problem. I can't seem to get the little rubber grommets and screws to do their thing. I'm speaking of part no.s 11 and 12 in this fiche. This is a little rubber grommett and screw that attaches the front cowling to the ram air piping. When I take the stuff off and try it, it works like a charm, but once I mount everything, I can't get the screw to start into those threads. I have mounted the front cowling and all ram air intake piping, as well as the covers. Should I slide a feeler gauge under the front cowling and push up on the grommets a little, or should I disassemble the whole shebang, start those screws, and then re-mount all involved plastics? If those freaking screws were 1/16 of an inch longer, I wouldn't be typing this.

Actually that that screw fits into what I call a rubber nut. What I usually do is start the screw into the rubber nut (about two to three turns) then using the screw push the rubber nut through the hole. That is the way it is supposed to mount. According to the diagram you sent it is a windscreen nut. But since I can not see what it is supposed to be holding for sure, I am not sure if what I am telling you is correct. If you do not mind, give me a call 760-314-7042.

As always, thanks for the excellent advice buddy! Now that I think about it, I should have just threaded the screw part way, inserted and tightened (like you said). What I wound up doing is, I took a couple of thick feeler gauges and inserted them between the cowling and the ram air cover. I then pried up on the bottom of the rubber nut and turned the screw up top. This compressed the rubber enough for me to get a grip on the threads. Thanks Bill. I almost called you last night (I didn't see your answer until this morning).

My pleasure. The flange on the rubber nut usually rests against the fairing face.
