Default Looking 4: used M50 Blvd or Yamaha V-* Custom 650

I'm looking for a used 2005 Suzuki M50 Boulevard or a 2005 Yamaha V-Star Custom 650. I need it shipped to Radcliff, KY - zip 40160. I'm looking for one with a little higher mileage as I cannot afford one that's brand new (or under 5k miles or so) including shipping. If you know anyone looking to sell such a bike (preferably the all black models), please let me know. Will take saddlebags and other accessories into consideration of price (this would be my first bike).

Thanks!
Brian

Default I figure...

Well, I figured it'd be easier to just field offers, but of course it depends... it seems like $700 off the "new" MSRP value for being used is about average - I've seen one dealer on ebay selling the 2005s for almost a thousand under the original MSRP, while still new with almost 0 miles. Then about $30 off for every 100 miles driven. But again, I can't afford over $4000 before shipping, unless it's close to KY and cheaper to ship. Obviously, it needs to have more miles, but I am also concerned about the 10,000 mile service as I understand that's expensive. I would expect used saddlebags to be worth about $150 and a used helmet around $30. I'm new to this, but getting the details on an offer - the specifics about a bike - would help me know if I thought it was a win win deal and within my reach. Obviously, I need a clear title, no salvage or "lay down" on the bike. All the dealers tell me I'm taking a chance buying new because "you don't know what you're gonna get" etc... So, I don't want to insult experienced bikers, and was hoping for offers. I'm watching ebay closely, but most of the bikes don't seem to actually sell - the reserve never seems to be met. I am sure a Yamaha V-Star Custom 650 is more attainable, but I don't know if there are more in circulation available for sale - the M50 seems to be pretty popular and there are more out there being offered - and I like it the best. I like both - all black cruisers with V-Twin engines and with the shaft final-drive as opposed to chain types. I really like that the M50 is liquid cooled and has fuel injection, and is 805cc, but I will settle for the Yamaha 650 with air-cooling if I can't find the M50. Of course, I'm open to consideration and persuasion - I've got none of the gear - helmet, gloves, saddle-bags etc, and this is my "newbie" take on the value of the bikes so far.

No offense dude....but some of the phrasing you used...."field offers".....that's kinda backwards don't ya think? Again, no offense meant, but as a potential seller....I'm not trying to "bid" for your business. A seller sets a price and a buyer makes an "offer" to buy. The seller either accepts the offer, or they negotiate to a price they both live with, or the seller moves on to the next guy who might be willing to pay more. It almost sounds like you're putting an RFQ out there. You don't work as a Purchasing Agent do you?

Buying a bike (new especially) is nowhere near the experience of buying a car. It can be twice as frustrating, because a lot of dealers (especially around here) would have you believe that the same strategies of buying a car don't apply. Problem is, they get enough people to believe their schlock, and it empowers and enables their behavior. I liken bike dealers to Used Car Dealers of twenty years ago. They haven't caught up to the consumer driven philosophy that the car business was forced to take in order to evolve.

However, if you have 4K cash, put it down on a new one, and put the rest on a Suzuki credit card. That way you can cover the expenses of the gear you need without doing it on the cheap, and cutting corners.

Used Helmet.......NEVER! Don't do it. Spend the extra 80-90 bucks over what you budgeted ($30 for a used helmet) to get one that is brand new, fits YOU properly, and you know it's history. You can get a good brand new HJC for about $120 or so, also the Scorpion EX400 is a feature packed helmet for a bargain price. Hell for $30, you can go to PEP Boys and buy their helmet. (Use the "Search" button for the forum, and look up helmet shootout....the PEP Boys helmet was one of the highest rated helmets out there.) If it's not $30, it's close to it in price.

Good luck, and continue to ask questions. We'll all be here to help you out in your pursuit.

You might want to check the For Sale section on VolusiaRiders.com, some folks buy new C50s and then decide that maybe motorcycling isn't really for them, or they decide they need a $16,000 H-D. There are some deals out there. Patience is tough though...

Newenough.com (they actually only sell new stuff) has some very good helmets at great prices in their closeouts. Last year's doscontinued colors are frequently good deals, and you're still getting a top notch lid. I'd stay away from used socks and used helmets.

Not too far up the Bluegrass Parkway from you is Lee's Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki. They are a very good dealer and frequently have nice used bikes.

Try www.cycletraders.com

I have seen new M50's with more off. If you look at an 05, you may find one.
When you are looking for a bargain, you take what you can get, not what you want.
