One additional thought:
Always make the guy who chews tobacco ride in the back.
I don't sleep with my arm throught the spokes when I camp, but a cheep bicycle chain type lock or length of chain will loop though the wheel and back to your ankle while you sleep, and it will still let you turn over and get confortable. At hotels, I get a ground-floor room with an outside entrance, and just pull the bike right into the room.
