Yes you are, higher octane can actually reduce fuel economy. Just use what the book says or the lowest octane rating that doesn't cause pinging or knock. Higher octane is needed for higher compression engines, compression can cause the fuel to preignite, higher octane has additives that retard ignition otherwise it is the same stuff.
