Default First Bike: RM250

I am a bit of a n00b when it comes to dirt-bikes. I found a '00 RM250 in great condition on eBay for a good price. I know now that it probably was not the best "first bike", but I am going to stick with it. I have been out riding a bit and ran into two problems and I was wondering if you guys thought it was because A) need to fix a part, B) need to do some tuning, C) something I just have to get used to.

Problems
1. When I start up the bike and put it into first, I either stall it or do a wheelie. I let the clutch out slowly and keep the gas going, but it still stalls. Is there a way to start out like a sane person?

2. After riding a bit, it does not seem to idle much. If I try to coast around a turn, I find myself having to hold in the clutch and gas it to keep it from stalling out. A friend suggested that it might be because I was not in the correct gear at the time, which may be true, but the one time, I just came to a rolling stop in 1st gear to talk to someone and it shut off.

Like I said, I am a n00b at this and any advice would be appreciated. I just ordered the Clymer guide for it.
