Fourth Annual Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival

When: Friday May 1, 2009 – 7:00 to 11:00 p.m.
Guests are invited to sample local Mexican cuisine while relaxing with Cuervo margaritas and Mexican beer.
Entertainment will include a live performance by 15-piece salsa salsa group Orquesta GarDel, performances by professional salsa and ballroom dancers and a guest appearance by Charlie and Chelsea, the official RiverDog mascots. Top Latin hits from DJ Luigi will finish out the night.
For dancing enthusiasts, this is your chance to practice your moves and watch talented dancers perform in the second annual “Dancing with Local Stars” dance competition.
The mission of the Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival is to encourage togetherness between diverse communities in the Charleston area, to promote awareness of The Ryan White HIV Care Program at Roper St. Francis Healthcare and raise funds for their program.
The event was founded in 2006 and takes place annually on or near May 5th, a Mexican holiday which is widely celebrated throughout the United States in order to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.
Tickets are $10 for adults or $5 with a current student ID. Children 12 and under are FREE. Food and drinks are sold separately.

*Fifteen-piece salsa group, Orquesta GarDel, is bringing “hurricane-force salsa from North Carolina” to this year’s Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival. Founded by David Garcia, a professor at UNC Chapel Hill, Orquesta GarDel plays big, brassy salsa sounds that are said by fans to create music so energetic you can feel it on your skin!
