Default General questions from a newbie

I'm so new I haven't even got a bike to work with, but I figured now is probably better time to ask some of these questions:

I've noticed that older bikes have carburetors, and some new bikes have fuel injection; what are the operational drawbacks or advantages between the two? And what are the maintenance features for either? What about overall performance impacts? I want to make sure that I'm not spoiled on my first bike by picking a system that I'll be frustrated with. I've read that bikes that need to be choked sometimes need to run a good 10 or 15 minutes to warm up.

What sort of routine bike maintenance should I learn about? Is there a good book on this for beginners? Bikes seem to be more accessible than cars, but how complicated are these engines - are there any standard tool kits for bikes?

And just generally - what is the standard annual cost for bike maintenance? I'm looking at Suzuki sport bikes (gsx-r 600 and the gsx 600f, specifically) for my first bike; but I could go for a cruiser (depending on the price). I live in New England, so I have to consider winterizing, etc.

Thanks for the help, in advance.
