If you want true engine protection then you need to go with actual engine guards. However any structural metal piece (i.e. MCE hwy pegs) that sticks out farther than your engine will act as an engine guard to a point. I think if you were to lay your bike down or drop it in a parking lot it would protect your engine. If you lost control of your bike going faster it wouldn't be as effective as actual crash bars.
