Back on topic, your safest bet really is to get off the road - pull over onto the shoulder.
Most people just larking around aren't going to bother to slow down to a complete stop and pull over. If they do, then they aren't messing around which is where you either take your chances back on the road on your bike, or protect yourself by some other means - it's a good idea to carry while you ride, especially if you ride alone. My wife has one of those North American Arms .22s. They take a .22 magnum round which will definitely ruin a bad guy's day.
On a cruiser I wouldn't fancy my chances outrunning any car. My truck would run my bike down above 100 mph - and really wouldn't be that far behind in a straight line race from a standstill (0-60 in 6 seconds and 1/4 mile in 14.5)
