We were visiting our son a few weeks ago before he left for a second trip to the Arabian Gulf - he's stationed in San Diego. Anyway, we needed a pass so we could get onto the various Navy facilities while we were there so we went to the office where they are handled on North Island. The girl ahead of us in line was from Alaska (can you guess what's coming here?) and she hands over her driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance as required. The guy behind the counter (an E-4) takes it all, looks it over, then sits down and continues examining all the paperwork. Finally, after about a minute or two of looking at the papers, shaking his head, and smiling, he looks up at the girl and says:
"Tell me if I'm wrong, but is Alaska part of the United States?"
