I just got back from a friends house that has an older intruder and remembered this post. Yep, the battery is in front of the rear tire. He had it fall out and drag by the cables last year in the middle of nowhere. He ended up finding an old slim jim wrapper in a field and tied it up till he got home. Funny stuff if it's not you. I suggested that he modify it and move it to the front of the bike, if possible.
