My whole philosophy on motorcycling is that it is dangerous, but that a lot of our pain is self inflicted in a manner of speaking. People don't get training, don't have a license, don't practice, and many drink and ride. Also many of our accidents are single vehicle crashes, mostly our own fault I suppose. I was convinced that if I was smart and didn't do anything stupid I would be ok, or at least with much better odds.

Well what I did was stupid. I've been in disbelief all day wondering what to do next.
We all make dumb mistakes, the trick is to learn from them so as not to repeat them.

From what your saying, it sounds like you had yourself a little panic attack, and froze up. I'm just guessing here, but if that's what happened, than the best way to not repeat it is practice so you know what your limitations are.
