I voted non gauntlets. My first pair of gloves were short, the Icon Super-Duty gloves. Later I got the Joe Rocket Razors gauntlet style gloves for highway riding to offer better protection. It turned out the cuff part didn't fit over my jacket so I cut off the cuffs so they're short now.
Try on different pairs of gloves and go for what's the most comfortable for you. Wearing any type of glove will offer better protection than no gloves at all.
