The guy in the cockpit was making "contact" in a switch that engaged the magnetos. It was a warning so the prop guy didn't get his arm lopped off.

They say they kill less that 100% not so much because some critters are unkillable, but because even non-porous surfaces offer protective hideouts. Also, it takes some threshold number of virii to infect a person. One won't do it.
