cassettes worked well, especially in cars.
Man, I had the Tom Petty album "full moon rising" on cassette and must have played the whole thing a couple of hundred times.
CD's were expensive back then, they cost $9, and cassettes cost $5 and change.
That and CD players for cars were like $300 vs $150 for cassette decks.
and now it's mp3s. I remember the very first time I heard the phrase, May 1994, invented in Das fatherland. I thought "this will flip music on it's ear."
Well, it took several years, but it did just that.
