I say go for it. I am currently riding my 2001 F650 to Ushaia, Argentina (right now I am in Cuenca, Ecuador) and the bike has served me pretty well. My only complaints are that the oil pressure sensors fail every 20,000 miles so make sure and carry a 23 mm wrench and an extra sensor. Also, the dual exhausts are not very practical and make it harder to put on panniers. The rear luggage rack is plastic and only rated for 3 kilos.
Other than these annoyances I would say that it is a pretty low maitenance bike and that you will enjoy it.
Good Luck!
