Since when did a mfg ever care what aftermarket prices were?
I figure they got away from the can under the seat because there were few advantages and it would cost more to make the bike that way.
Usually the cheapest design wins; failing that the next cheapest design that "looks cool." Cool being a very subjective thing and all.
