Default NewBee performance questions (gsxr 1100)

Hi all!
Brand new to the forum and also new to owning a GSXR. I have had many bikes in the past including some un-mentioned other sport bikes.
I just purchased a 1990 1100cc gsxr that is bone stock all the way from the airbox to the factory dual exaust.

I would like to know of your suggestions to hop it up a little.
I don't want to go crazy and budget is an issue for sure.

A friends suggestion was a timeing advancer as a low cost item that would do a fair bit towards preformance. Also to open up the air flow to the carbs? Are the factory headders restrictive? Can I get more flow and keep the factory pipes? I don't mind giving up the factory pipes (would probably keep all factory stuff for possible future restore to original) but know that a new pipe is quite expensive if added to the cost of a header.

Any thoughts would be appriciated.
Thanks in advance!
