Default Oil Pan Crack

I was helping my buddy change his oil yesterday...and when he put the drain bolt back in the oil pan and started tightening it, the bolt hole cracked on the right hand side of the oil pan. I watched him do it, and it wasnt like he was over torquing it...I've seen bolt heads shear off if you over torque...I just couldnt believe that the pan would crack like that...its like a half inch thick around the bolt hole! could it have been that the previous owner over-tightened it and started a hairline crack or something? could it be a manufacturer defect?
