I use the Tom Tom software on a pocket PC (IPAQ).
The receiver unit is small, about the size of a matchbox.

I tend to leave them both turned off, and when I am stopped (gloves off!)
They could be in a tankbag (clear top) but the battery life of both units sucks, so tend to just whipo em out when lost or stopped.

Not sure if the TOM TOM software is the best, or not, but it works well, and was a cheap solution. Can't carry too many maps!.

Have spoken to some other riders, and they are happy with the units - but are wary of leaving them on the bike. Very easy to steal, or forget.

Don't hear any bad reports on the unitys here in Oz.
