Actually, here's another beer history fact. Fruited beers are really a more recent product except in Belgium.
This is where a "Lambic" or "lambic-style" beer originated. They used a large amount of hops because of its natural preservative nature. In particular they used an aged, dried hops. This gave a beer an old cheese-like hops smell and a very bitter flavor. So, to cover up the bitter taste and smell, they started adding fruit.
Now with all the craft brewing going on, many brewers are making what they call Lambic-style or plambic beers. In fact they are just a fruity beer.

Me, I'll stick with the natural lambic. I like the bitter beer.

Don't fruit the beer.
