Hey ya'll...it's Rainman coming out of lurking status.
Looks like Last Guy's got the bug again to put on another one these "little" shin digs. I for one was VERY impressed with the level of orginzation and effort he put into our Gatlinburg run. He did a hell of a job with it. If you've never coordinated something like this before, you probably don't realize the number of phone calls, e-mails and headaches it takes to get this all done. Sean stepped up last year and made it easy for all of us.
Sean hit the nail on the head here....if '07 is going to be anywhere OTHER than in the Smokey's or North Georgia, then we're going to need LOCAL ORGANIZERS and ROAD CREW. Myself and the Misfits agreed to do the road crew duties this last time 'round because we knew the area and were confident we could get ya'll back to the Hotel in one piece. Like Sean said, there's nothing like trying to get a freight train turned around because we missed a turn.
Sean, myself and Gumby went up and did a recon and actually drove the route ahead of time so we knew our turns and also had it laid out in the GPS. When you're doing a ride of this size, you can't NOT be prepared. I say this only to point out that if it's somewhere we're not already familiar with and recon'd before, we'd love to be particpants, but not organize it. I can't see leading ya'll on a ride relying soley on the GPS. If it went out or wasn't just exactly right, I wouldn't have a clue where to go.
I'm going up to the Smokies in about 3 weeks for a little R&R with Shifty and we'll probably do a little exploring. Most likely, we'll come back with some new favorites. We're going to spend a night in Maggie Valley which is somewhere I've never been to, but always wanted to see. I'll keep this ride in the back of my mind.
Anyway - ya'll talk it over and if you want me and the Misfits back for the Smokey's round 2, I think I can speak for most of us and say we'd be honored to do it again.
BTW - If you're in the North Georgia area on October 14th, I'd appreciate you lending your support to my pet project - the North Georgia Lung Cancer Ride. My sister's got stage 4 lung cancer and we're trying to raise a little money to help out lung cancer research at Vanderbilt in Nashville. For more info visit
