I'm not sure it really does (hold 5.8 gallons). . . . .I've never had it "sputter" but then I never ride it past about 250-260 miles per tank. And like you it takes "roughly" 4.3-4.5 gallons to fill it up. On longer trips toss a couple of aluminum pint containers of fuel in my panniers "Just in case".
