Looking in your mirrors when you are stopped is a good habit to have, I'm glad nothing bad happened.
It's always good to mentally plot an escape route in case the person behind you is going faster than you are. If you wait until the last second, your evasion could collide with the other driver's evasion - so if you're in doubt just safely get the heck out of the way.
