Things I Like about the Motorcycling Culture - compiled by Kevin A. Case

There was a recent thread in our forum about the things we motorcyclists enjoy when it comes to the culture and environment of motorcycling. Here are a few, written by Motorcycle-Journal.com forum members:

Aside from the feeling of riding, and the gas milage, i gotta say the thing i like most is the feeling of belonging to a group. - dichotomous

Kids are my one of my favorites. Just seems when I’m crusing some of the back roads, when there’s kids in the front lawn, they love waving and shouting (with big grins on their faces) at me and whomever I may be riding with. - Stasy

I like the individual freedom of being out there and not having to be going from point A to point B. - drgibson

I like that I am doing something tha not everyone can do. I like the fact that when I go out on the bike all my other problems disappear even if its just for awhile. The feeling you get when you feel “at one” with the machine. I could go on all day but those are a few. - viper94bite

I love being alone, on the road, not a damn care in the world.
I love talking to people I would normally never get a chance to meet.
I love when kids stretch their necks in the car to see the kewl motorcycle behind them.
I love the feeling of being only inches above the ground at speed.
I love the going anywhere, who cares WHERE..just going and experiencing the small things in life…like a 200 mile drive to get an ice cream cone. - dragbar

On a serious note, I like the aromas that I don’t catch in a car. Orange blossoms, jasmine, strawberries in the field. Freshly mown grass. Herbs growing alongside the road. I can smell people grilling their dinner. Laundry being done. The smell of the lady’s perfume in the car in front of you.The downside, you also smell the diesel, cigarette smoke, hot tar, the filth coming from the jalopy three cars ahead with the bad head gasket, swamp rot, backed up septic tanks, cow manure, noxious weeds overgrowing ponds. The good smells outweigh the bad though and add to the enjoyment of the ride.I like loafing down a country road in between fifty and sixty miles an hour. Just under the threshold of where the wind starts doing funky things to appendages. There’s no effort to hang on, and the engine is just humming along effortlessly too. Everything is just in a zone at this point.Oh…and having a cruiser leaned over 32 degrees through a corner is just the coolest feeling. - intimid8er

I like the fact the no matter how bad the day is at work I can get on the bike and by the time I get home the stress and the headache are gone. Then I remember that I live with three teenagers… - HEELSFAN

1. The beauty of cruising the open road in the countryside.
2. The feeling of freedom, invincibility, and the wind in your face.
3. Knowing that I’m a part of an elite brotherhood.
4. Complete strangers are actually nice simply because we ride bikes.
5. Going from point A to point B takes longer by bike than by car simply because I feel like it (the scenic route excuse).
6. How often do you get a chance to tell people that you got loads of explosive power between your legs?
7. There seems to be something about bikes that puts smiles on children’s faces. - EZridr1

I like that riding a motorbike gets me all the fly honies. Even though my alarm clock goes off immediately afterwards. - D_Klein
I’ll chime in. Hills and curves on the bike. A great wax and polish job. Kurayakin ISO grips. Long rides. My girl on the back. - italian biker
How I can look around me, and there are no posts or a roof, just all open, if I wanted to I could reach out and touch things. I like how I can work on my own bike without tons of uneedingly expensive tools. - dichotomous

Well weathered leather….hot metal and oil….the scented country air…sunlight on chrome….the view of the landscape….every nerve aware. - arkieollie

The freedom, the cool morning rides, being out there getting away from everything, even though just for a while. I love the friendliness of the biker group, (although I feel we should ALL be this way biker or not), the unobstructed views, the humbling power, the whole darn experience!!! I love it! - bajaraider

Drive like the wind…..Straining the limits of machine and man……
Laughing out loud…..With fear and hope, I’ve got a desperate planAt the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded
At the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle
At the fireside… {Rush lyrics} - intimid8er

I was born to ride. God invented motorcycles because he knew that one day I would be along. The culture … most bikers I know are pretty cool, we share a common interest. Getting waves from strangers is cool. .. I even wave to fella’s and ladies on scooters and mopeds… they endure much of the same, and deserve a wave. For the most part I don’t care at all about the culture …. I just like being out there in the wind, just me and my bike…. staying on my toes dodging idiots and trying not to be killed … I love the expirience. - 92Notch

I like the connection to the world I have when riding. Driving a car insulates you from everything. - tlwisner

I like not being able to hear my phone ring. Once that helmet goes on I get into my own little world. - Rockhead

Not having the alpine system in the jeep, and not minding that I dont have it..- dichotomous

When I’m on my bike, NOT ONE of the issues or problems of my daily life can reach me. Whether a rider uses 250 cc’s or 1800+ cc’s, the one sure thing is that the bike can outrun all the crap life throws at you. - POE-BOY SAMICH

I like being able to get out with a couple of friends go cruising to some place I would never go (because I absolutely hate driving) and not minding at all how long it will take to get there, I enjoy having my wife or kids riding along as well. - robertc729

There you have it. There are lots of great reasons why we love to ride. If you have anything to add, feel free to add them in the comments section and we get them posted as soon as we can. Ride Safe!
